A typical Rhythmunity show starts in West Africa, travels through North Africa
and the Middle East to the Indian subcontinent, then to Cuba, and Brazil.
The musicians play and demonstrate instruments from around the globe, such as djembe, djun djun, riq, doumbek, Indian tabla, dhol, bata, congas, shekere, surdo, repernique, pandero etc.
In addition to the basic construction and playing technique, the ensemble shares with its audience unique stories inherent to the indigenous instruments and their cultures.
These connections between music, culture, language and geography help to create a more complete and profound learning experience.
The Rhythmunity Ensemble is a group of percussionists from all over the world who present a musical world tour of traditional percussion music. Committed to education in the belief that knowledge can breakdown the barriers between cultures, the ensemble has performed for over 100,000 public school students. The program interweaves music, folklore, history and geography in a very entertaining and accessible presentation. The ensemble members are all highly accomplished musicians who have studied and performed all over the world..
The musicians have strong connections with the cultures and music presented in the show and they care a great deal about sharing cultural background in order to take the learning experience beyond music alone.
As serious life long educators, we have strong teaching resumes reflecting our work with people of all ages and backgrounds (K-12, secondary education, through college to pro musicians), therefore we can effectively reach our audiences to create a lasting educational experience.
We take great pleasure in talking to our audience about the instruments, music and cultures we ourselves are constantly learning to evolve as musicians, this enables us to interact with our audience translating into a joyful celebration of learning and sharing drumming from around the world.
